Voiceover

Two Sides to “Bilingual”

September 14, 2023 by Brian Amador

Amador Bilingual Voiceovers Las Dos Caras

Updated from a previously published post.

The growth of the Hispanic population in the U.S. (around 18% of the population in 2023) has led to increased demand for audio content targeted to that demographic. All genres of voiceover work, from commercials and explainer videos to e-learning, corporate narration, promos and more, are incorporating Spanish and bilingual content. And the increased demand has brought an expansion of VO talent offering their services in Spanish, from fluent native speakers to those who learned a little Spanish in high school.

I think anyone seriously involved in Spanish or English-Spanish bilingual voiceover work would agree that it’s not a good idea to sell yourself as a Spanish-speaking talent if you are not able to speak the language fluently, expressively and with an impeccable accent. In this regard, there are obvious advantages to hiring talent born and educated in a Spanish-speaking country.

But it’s not an absolute necessity. There are U.S.-born Spanish speakers who are completely bilingual – native speakers who can speak both English and Spanish and switch effortlessly between the two languages.

Full Bilingualism = Value Added

In my career as an English/Spanish bilingual voice actor, my standards are exactly the same for both languages: perfect, native pronunciation and expression. Surprisingly, I’ve found that sometimes being a native English speaker is just as important as being a native Spanish speaker. Being fully bilingual has advantages:

  • It’s important to recognize errors in translation and be able to make suggestions to correct them. Sometimes English expressions are translated directly into Spanish; if you are familiar with the colloquial expressions in English, it may be easier to find the best Spanish equivalent.
  • Some translation problems are due to grammatical errors or ambiguities in the source text. If you have a complete command of written English, you can more easily identify and correct these errors.
  • In overdubs, errors in translation may be due to the translator misunderstanding spoken English words because of the speaker’s accent or dialect. As a native English speaker, I am able to understand many different accents (although I admit I still watch “Masterpiece Theatre” with the subtitles on!)
  • For recordings of a specified duration, mastery of both languages makes it easier to adapt translations to fit in in a given time without sacrificing the meaning of the source copy.
  • It’s an extra perk for the client to be able to use the same voice talent in English and Spanish and have both languages sound natural and conversational.

Quality is What Matters

Given the growing importance of the Spanish language in the United States, and just as a matter of principle, the standards for Spanish and bilingual voiceover should always be as high as they are for English. It is as important for creators of content in Spanish, as it is for English-language creators, to find speakers who have a perfect command of the language, whether they are “native” or ”imported” speakers. There are two sides to “bilingual”. In some cases, mastery of English may be just as important as mastery of Spanish.

Voiceover For Educational Awareness

June 20, 2023 by Rosi Amador

Rosi Amador
Rosi Amador, Bryn Mawr College graduate

Updated from a previously published post.

As the first member of my family to attend college, I am passionate about the issue of educational access. My parents, who raised me in San Juan, Puerto Rico, had always been quite clear about their desire for me to attend college in the United States. My dad was only able to make it through 5th grade in his native Buenos Aires. And my mom, following her graduation from a public high school in a Latino neighborhood of New York City, started working as a secretary to support her family. You can only imagine how thrilled they were when I was accepted to Bryn Mawr, my top choice for college.

I was able to attend quality schools throughout my upbringing because of my parents’ perseverance, tenacity, and business savvy. I now have the honor of belonging to a family that gives back by lending our voices to numerous educational projects. We are fortunate to collaborate with creators who are as passionate about the value of education and creativity as we are.

The Boom in Online Learning

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many people shifted to remote working, so naturally, people are increasingly looking to digital learning to develop new skills to navigate today’s ever-changing world.

The US has the highest number of online learners with almost 18 million, according to the World Economic Forum, even ahead of China and India! That increase in the need for learning meant that we got to lend our voices to many more amazing projects in these last three years.

Serving a Growing Spanish-Speaking Educational Market

Forbes reported that as of 2022, 13% of the population speaks Spanish at home, earning it the title of the most common non-English language spoken. The U.S. is home to the 2nd largest Spanish-speaking population in the world, behind only Mexico. It’s no wonder that more than half of our work since 2020 has been for content creators of Spanish language e-learning. We’ve recorded for a vast variety of educational projects, in unaccented American English, neutral Latin American Spanish, and Hispanic-accented English. With our revolutionary Accent-o-meter, you can check out the varying levels of hispanic accents we can provide.

Educational Narration for A New World

My husband Brian, our son Zia and I all love using our voices to promote global education, social change and cross-cultural understanding. Our skill set is well suited to providing voiceovers and educational narration for both young and adult audiences. Whether it’s an online video, a bilingual television promo, a Spanish overdub, or an animated educational game, we are privileged to provide voice overs and related services (music, translation) to enhance our clients’ projects. It’s a wonderful job.

I’m proud to highlight some examples of voice over work we’ve done on educational projects created by wonderful clients, new and old.

WNET, New York Public Media’s “Parenting Minutes” ~ Rosi Amador, Narrator

Rosi Amador provided the Spanish voiceover and overdub for this educational spot for Thirteen-WNET, the primary Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member television station for the New York City market. Many thanks to The WNET Group and Suzanne Rose, Senior Producer at Thirteen-WNET, for this amazing opportunity!

Planned Parenthood & Springtime Jellyfish’s “Am I Normal? Puberty, Explained” ~ Zia Amador, Narrator

Zia Amador recorded both the English and Spanish voice for “Am I Normal? Puberty, Explained”. Springtime Jellyfish teamed up with Planned Parenthood for their new series explaining puberty, a total of four videos. For this project we worked with the Planned Parenthood team and combined stop-motion animation with 2D digital animation to create a unique, inviting, playful and friendly video series.

JSI & the Reproductive Health National Training Center’s “Family Planning & Hypertension” ~ Brian Amador, Narrator

Brian Amador recorded the English voiceover for this educational piece about family planning and hypertension for the Reproductive Health National Training Center (RHNTC), as part of their collaboration with the Office of Population Affairs (OPA) and the Office on Women’s Health (OWH) in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health to address the needs of Title X family planning service delivery grantees and Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) grantees through training and technical assistance (TA).

Bringing our ‘Grain of Sand’ to Help Educational Media Producers

Here are a few ways we can complement your creative process in producing effective non-profit videos focusing on education and social change.

  • Using our acting skills to bring just the right amount of emphasis to your project;
  • Offering original music and production services to increase the reach of your message;
  • Offering translation, native Spanish voiceover, script supervision and a bicultural/bilingual perspective to help you target your message to a Hispanic audience;
  • Sharing your passion for your work. We love to work with creatives who also care deeply: our voiceover family and dedicated staff are all equally invested in the excellence of your project and the success of your mission.

Words That Matter

April 27, 2021 by Brian Amador

Events in the United States this January have given us a lot to think about. We watched in horror as our democracy was imperiled on January 6th. The shock of the insurrection is still in my heart. Yet, thankfully, my fear has been replaced by the hope that took hold as we watched the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris, and the broad condemnation of the insurrection.

Watching the inauguration, full of gorgeous music and inspiring poetry that healed and uplifted us, and seeing the actions taken in the first days of the new administration, it’s evident that compassion, justice, truth, science, competence and even civil discourse are back! And seeing a proposed cabinet that looks like America in its diversity feels like a dream come true.

Nominees include: Deb Haaland for Secretary of the Interior (from Brian’s home state, New Mexico), who if confirmed will be the first ever Native American cabinet secretary; Dr. Miguel Cardona, a talented son of the Puerto Rican diaspora, who hopefully soon will be our Education Secretary; and Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who grew up in a segregated town in Louisiana, chosen for UN Ambassador. And in contrast to the previous administration, all of President Biden’s nominees have actual, relevant experience in the areas in which they’ll be working. Our family is so grateful for this.

Adapting to the “New Normal”

When the pandemic began we realized that, while we were set up perfectly to work at home, we, too had to stretch and grow. 2020 was a year of learning. We started collaborations with numerous new clients, recording countless health trainings and PSA’s around COVID 19, political spots, web videos, and much more. Many of our clients had to adapt and innovate due to the pandemic, and we were able to help them thanks to our professional home studio and remote recording capacity.  Fortunately, we also got to deepen our long term working relationships with some of our favorite regulars, something we never, ever take for granted.

New Projects with Old Friends – from Clients to Friends

There are certain clients whose vision has aligned with ours from our very first meeting; that’s what happened with Planet Nutshell. They’re a one of a kind, full-service animation studio that has been creating compelling media since 2008. We’re thrilled to feature them here.

Every project Planet Nutshell has asked us to participate in resonates with our values. And they have a frequent need for bilingual content, which of course, just happens to be our specialty. Together we’ve worked on a wide range of projects promoting positive social change, as well as small and large scale projects for a wide variety of clients showcasing education, science, healthcare, music, Latino empowerment, and much more.

In 2020, Planet Nutshell approached us about a different kind of project. Founder (and now friend) Josh Gunn knows that we’re musicians and that Brian is a composer. He asked Brian to write music for an animated short film “Azúcar”, a poignant immigration story. As Josh describes it:

“Azúcar is the story of a mother and son who have journeyed over 1500 miles to get from Honduras to the US border in search of a better life. The film follows them on the night of their attempted crossing, when nothing goes to plan.”

Brian is thrilled to contribute his musical skills to this beautiful story. The film should be released soon. Meanwhile, you can see the trailer here.

Planet Nutshell Casts a Wide Net

We also got to collaborate with Planet Nutshell as voice actors on a variety of their clients’ projects. They created inspiring animations for the Latino Victory Project’s “Tu Voto” (“Your Vote”) campaign, and asked us to provide bilingual voiceovers. The project was aimed at turning out Latino voters in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and North Carolina. It was a wonderful experience and a perfect opportunity to honor our Hispanic roots through our voices at a critical time.

I also got a huge kick out of voicing a series of whimsical animations recorded for Kentucky Educational Television focusing on music education, and my daughter Alisa Amador had the pleasure of recording the story of Lucille Packard, founder of Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital. A while back, when folks could still go to museums, I recorded for the “Culture Pass NYC” animated video. (Sigh… those days will return now that the vaccine is here, so long as we’re all patient. What a treat it’ll be to go to museums again, right?) You can see these animations and more created by Planet Nutshell at the top of this playlist.

You can also check out the rest of their remarkable work at PlanetNutshell.com.

¡Gracias Joshua! It has been a pleasure working with people engaged in helping others understand this beautiful but sometimes complicated world.

A friendly reminder

I’m saying adiós for now. I share this amazing professional experience with you all because I have faith that reading about resilient efforts to better our world through creativity will brighten up your day. Our voices, our talent and our values can reshape our daily approach to life! Take care, stay safe and remember that the light will always be found at the end of the tunnel. We truly look forward to whatever inspiring projects 2021 sends our way from our terrific clients and new ones too, so we can bring their words to life to the best of our ability.

Latinx Power: Bilingual Political Voiceover for Inclusive Government

January 26, 2021 by Brian Amador

Voting is the most effective way to make your voice heard on the issues that matter most to you.

Did you know that according to the Census Bureau’s 2019 estimates, the U.S. Hispanic population reached a record 60.6 million? That’s an increase of 930,000 over the previous year! If we come out to the polls to flex our power, we can drive necessary change in our country.

The Spanish language and a Call to Action

We’re passionate about social, economic and environmental justice, and we love lending our voices to progressive causes and candidates. Over the years we’ve worked in this industry, we’ve had the privilege of collaborating with media producers on many powerful ads targeting Hispanics. During election season these opportunities become even more meaningful.

We recently recorded  “Nuestro País” – A call to action for immigrants to vote, for Just The Truth PAC, the featured video in this blog post. My wife and partner Rosi, our son Zia and I used our voices to advance and expand our democracy, making this one of our favorite projects. The 2020 election marks the first time that Hispanics are likely to be the largest racial or ethnic minority in the electorate, representing 18.4% of the total U.S. population. It could be argued that Spanish is becoming a compulsory second language in business, advertising and politics.

The Latinx community has come together in inspiring campaigns and narratives aimed at effecting change. The Latino Victory Project campaign is an ambitious, progressive effort to build political power within the Latino community. Rosi was honored to have been selected to provide the voiceover for this powerful Latino Victory profile video, currently featured on the organization’s Facebook page for election season 2020.  Latino Victory’s goal is to win elections for local, state and federal offices; it advocates on behalf of the Latino community by advancing a positive narrative about Latino values and influence.

ABVO has been entrusted to voice a wide variety of bilingual and Spanish ads, videos and eLearning tutorials meant to inform, guide and inspire our Latinx population. We believe it is crucial for us all to be informed so that we can consciously exercise our right to vote. We take pride that our work has reached so many bicultural, bilingual, and Spanish speaking people. We know that multiculturalism has been the trend for a while now. As a bicultural family, we embrace this reality and the opportunity to reach out to previously underserved audiences.

This November, we in the Latinx community have the opportunity to make our voices heard. Our community deserves representation by leaders who will step up and effect change on the issues that affect us. Our family has already voted. If you can do so, vote for the future! Vote for those who can’t vote! But more importantly, let’s vote for progress in this country. Because we’ve never faced a more consequential election.

In saying adiós for now, we would like to share with you an amazing project ABVO had the pleasure of collaborating on. It’s a tiny film with a big idea: to ask viewers across the world to take a minute to vizualise the better future we could have, even in the midst of this pandemic: “Imagine.” The speakers include Pope Francis, Nobel prize winner Dr. Mario Molina, UN climate treaty negotiator Christiana Figueres, and Indigenous leaders Hindou Ibrahim and Benki Piyako. It features a beautiful score by legendary composer Max Cooper, animation by award-winning experimental filmmakers/artists the McGloughlin brothers, and Spanish overdub  narration by our very own Rosi Amador.

Until next time, keep your ojos on the premio!

This election season, make sure to stay safe by taking all necessary precautions when you exercise your right to vote.

I’m so proud of my trans voice actor/musician/visual artist son, Zia Amador!

October 1, 2020 by Rosi Amador

It is my absolute pleasure and honor to feature my incredibly talented son, Zia Amador in this blog post. Zia recently returned to the world of voiceover after several years’ hiatus, out in the workforce, while he’s studying once again to pursue his multiple artistic passions. Zia was raised singing with us and has continued to study guitar and bass, and does some composing as well. He has a great voice! Ironically, it was the pandemic that brought us together. He wanted to be able to safely see our family, so he moved back home in June. You can’t imagine the moment when we all four hugged after months’ of social distancing! Brian and I feel so lucky to be living with both of our twins at the moment as they progress in their creative journeys. We feel like we’re living the dream!

I asked Zia to talk about his experience in the world of voiceover acting and the opportunities for inclusivity his voice represents. At 24 years old, Zia is currently studying at Massachusetts College of Art, the country’s only public university-level art school, where he is majoring in SIM: Studio for Interrelated Media, which allows him to combine his music study with a wide variety of arts media from textiles to event tech and production.

His personal story is one that I’m certain resonates with many young adults; as a young transgender man he feels that his transition has been a wonderful asset, both personally and professionally, allowing him to derive joy from voicing important messages in education and addressing contemporary challenges faced by millennials and Gen Z’ers.

“Usually they’re looking for a voice that isn’t affected one certain way. The way I talk sometimes I’m perceived as a gay man over the phone since I have more inflection in the way that I speak, so it’s, like, not particular to one gender presentation,” he explains.

As he navigates the opportunities available to him, Zia has noticed how much more comfortable he is with his voice now, allowing him to be more receptive to constructive criticism and to deliver work he’s proud of. He responds well in directed sessions and feels fortunate to have the resource of the ABVO studio — which takes care of production from start to finish, a luxury among young voice actors. Voiceover is not just a job for him, it’s the sense of accomplishment that comes from being part of something bigger. It’s supporting a mission to spread awareness about important topics in a way that’s representative of a wide spectrum of the population.

He added that “a lot of content for sex education that’s coming out now aims to be accessible to a wider audience, including queer people, and that’s why they’re looking for a voice that’s less binary.”. In educational messages geared towards a younger audience, that’s particularly exciting to Zia. “If kids hear a voice that’s not stereotypically male or female, that’s awesome,” he said.

It wasn’t always easy. Zia went through a period of doubt, where he wasn’t sure what niche his voice would fit into. Having done voiceover work for years with a higher pitched voice, he was usually doing spots for children’s apps, games, and books.

“My voice was something that I was very uncomfortable with before starting my hormonal transition. I’m now at a point where I really like my voice and enjoy it. It’s been a very grounding, embodying and beautiful experience,” he said.

He soon discovered that his new range allowed him to deliver more meaningful messages, like the bilingual call to action to report on sexual assault for the Family Planning National Training Center he recorded with his twin sister, Alisa Amador, produced by JSI, a public health care and health care and health systems consultants and researchers dedicated to improving health outcomes for all.  “It’s more of an acting challenge compared to things like children’s voiceover where you just need to sound really excited. The subtlety of conversational narration is a way cooler acting challenge to me,” he said.

Zia is skilled in native Spanish and English voiceovers (we’re all so happy that we insisted on maintaining Spanish as our home language!) and can also do a light accented English to target bicultural audiences living in the U.S. He’s worked with the Museum of Albuquerque, Pandora, Lectura Books, Just the Truth PAC,  and many other nationally recognized brands.

“Now I get to do a lot more work about things that I like, educational work, mental health and gender, literature, and bilingual understanding,” he said.

I’m truly proud of Zia, and so happy that he is finding joy in his creative expression in so many different ways that allow him to express his unique voice in this complicated world we live in. A world that’s better off with him in it if you ask this proud mama!

What does the “new normal” look like in the voiceover world?

July 8, 2020 by Rosi Amador

It’s become clear that the last few months have changed us in all aspects of our lives. These uncertain times have pushed us to think creatively, adapt our skills and really tap into our empathy. In the midst of so much chaos, it’s always uplifting to see stories of hard-working human beings reinventing themselves and pushing forward with their work to support themselves, their families and their communities.

New problems, age-old ingenuity.
In my performing arts circles, I’ve seen many colleagues in this country and others instantly lose all their bookings. Their income decimated, they’ve found new ways to keep working and generating income. Some are giving online concerts and educational presentations via Facebook and Youtube. Some have forged new partnerships with other musicians and cultural presenting organizations to make their work available to their fans. One of our musical colleagues found an ingenious way to adapt his skills to social distancing: offering serenades to people from outside their homes. Art is invention, so it’s not surprising that artists would find inventive solutions.

Lifting each other up.
It’s been very heartening to see how the pandemic has inspired compassion and generosity in so many. Arts and charitable organizations have stepped up to support artists who have lost income. Since voiceover has been our main source of income, we’ve enjoyed more freedom to donate our musical services. During the pandemic, we’ve had the privilege of doing online concerts to benefit some of these funds. Brian and I have also been volunteering for a hotline to help Spanish speakers access services such as unemployment insurance and rental assistance.

So what happens now? We all know that the pandemic is not over.

How will the lessons from the past few months reshape the world of advertising, marketing and branding moving forward? I would like to share with you some of my thoughts based on what my family has been experiencing as professional voiceover talents. Please feel free to comment with your own!

We need empathy and compassion more than ever.
A voice is not only powerful for the words it speaks and the message it carries. During the last few months I have received more requests for a compassionate, trustworthy, friendly voice. Companies are working hard to convey a message of caring and understanding. A message can be important on its own, but the right voice can make it resonate. No text on a screen can come close to a heart-felt call to action conveyed by a warm human voice.

A relatable voice can convey emotion and empathy, an intimate connection with the listener. It can also deliver a tone of authority in sharing important information. For reads like this, I need to make sure I voice the lines with confidence.

As a voice actor, like any actor, I draw from moments in my own life to express emotions. I think of times when I’ve comforted my kids or a dear friend, and instantly my voice becomes more nurturing, more comforting. Or maybe I think of how I talk to my dog, whom I adore. And speaking of dogs, here’s a case in point! I am the Spanish voice of Hill’s Pet Nutrition. Their national TV commercials these days highlight their commitment to donating food to shelters and to individuals who are fostering a dog.

Language continues to be extremely important.
As you know, we are a bilingual family and as such, we understand the importance of language as a way to connect with others in meaningful ways. During a crisis, however, language becomes even more important. When the information being shared can make a difference in someone’s health, translation and delivery are paramount! Localization matters, and it’s important to understand that the same word may mean something completely different from one population to another. We spoke about this in a past blog post.

Preparing for the unexpected.
When the pandemic hit, many businesses were caught unprepared and unable to swiftly transition into fully online operations. We feel very fortunate that throughout the years, we’ve built a professional studio with multiple remote recording capabilities (learn more here!). As I write this blog post we await the arrival of a new addition to our studio equipment that will improve playback quality for our clients in directed sessions. We can’t wait! But our innovation doesn’t stop there. The pandemic is still a reminder for all of us to think of how we can continue to remain relevant in our industries, especially in the work we do as a musical family.

With new platforms like Streamyard and OBS that interface with Facebook, we’ve been able to collaborate with other artists. We did a magical double bill concert for well over 1,000 live viewers, watched later by 31,000 people. The best part was that we  raised money for a worthy nonprofit in my native Puerto Rico.

Then there’s Zoom. Please tell me: what professional is not using Zoom these days to meet with clients and colleagues and to keep themselves informed and sharing resources? Nearly everyone has had to embrace new technology, regardless of their level of comfort with it. I really like this Zoom tutorial narrated by Brian using his friendly-authoritative, confident voice style, reassuring the listener that they’ve got this.

All of our situations look different, but in each situation there is an opportunity for growth, improvement and helping others. Let’s embrace that! Here are some questions I encourage you to ask yourself after reading this post. Feel free to let me know what you think.

  • What skills have I been using the most during the last 3 months and how can I use them further and/or improve them?
  • Do I have a business plan for the next 6-12 months? What about a plan B?
  • What have I learned during the last 3 months that I could teach others to positively impact their situation?

Please stay calm, stay safe and continue to take all the necessary precautions. If we work together, we WILL get through this! And if you need a song to calm you down, here’s a vocal harmony-rich gift for you from our family. It’s from our new CD, ¡En vivo, en familia!, which we will release on July 16th! Enjoy! And if you need our voices for your project, please reach out!
