Projects We Love

Honoring Cheech Marin

October 5, 2016 by Rosi Amador

CHCI Gala Awards Video Voiceover: Cheech Marin, Latino Role Model

Every now and again a project comes in that dovetails so perfectly with our mission of building cross-cultural bridges using our voices that I jump up and down for joy. This is definitely one of them. I had the honor and privilege of recording the voiceover for this video honoring actor, comedian, visual artist and activist Cheech Marin (of Cheech and Chong) for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s recent Awards Gala ceremony!

Click on the video to learn some secrets about Cheech’s interesting family roots, plus all he has done to break down cultural stereotypes, promote arts as a tool for social change and mentor Latino youth. He is truly an extraordinary role model, as CHCI asserts so eloquently in this video. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed voicing it.

CHCI’S Mission

CHCI Logo Cheech Marin Gala Award VideoFor nearly 40 years, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) has forged a critical pathway to Educate, Empower, and Connect our nation’s future Latino leaders, creating a transformative and lasting Impact on Latino youth and our nation. Learn more at CHCI.org. It was my pleasure to collaborate with seasoned producers O’Keefe Communications, who really captured the essence of the honorees’ contributions and histories. I also voiced videos honoring Ana María Chávez and Arnaldo Avalos. The timing was perfect, as this awards gala took place during Hispanic Heritage Month.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

As you may know, each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson and was extended to a month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. It was enshrined in law on August 17, 1988.

Narrating Inspiring Hispanic Literature for Teenagers

February 25, 2015 by Rosi Amador

Real life stories about Latino immigrants, inspiring first person accounts, the story of César Chávez, and poems authored by iconic Hispanic writers, poets and thinkers.

That’s what BookheadEd Learning approached Brian and me about recently. The company creates an award-winning web-delivered product (called StudySync), to improve reading, writing, and critical thinking with award-winning lessons aligned to the Common Core Standards for grades 4-12 in the U.S.

This is precisely the kind of project that inspired us choose voiceovers as a career in the first place! Using our voices to make a difference is our passion. Thank you to content coordinator Allison Schneider, whose testimonial I included below!

Brian and I had the privilege of voicing stories for high school learners by these extraordinary Hispanic authors/poets:

Pablo Neruda  |   Sandra Cisneros  |  Sonia Nazario  |   Judith Cofer Ortiz
   |   Rudolfo Anaya    |     Luis Omar Salinas

Excerpt from Elegy on the Death of César Chávez – Poem by Rudolfo Anaya
Narration: Brian Amador

From her Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario
Narration: Rosi Amador

“Rosi and Brian are voice over dynamos. Their creativity, friendliness and talent simply can’t be beat.  I cannot recommend them highly enough—they are true gems in the voice over industry! Thanks!”

– Allison Schneider, Content Coordinator BookheadEd Learning, LLC

I echo Brian’s sentiment: “This is material you can really sink your teeth into to give a dramatic read, plus it gives you the satisfaction of knowing that it’s being used to expose students to the literature of Hispanic America and beyond.” It was particularly poignant for Brian to read fellow New Mexican Rudolfo Anaya’s poem. For me, focusing on themes of social justice and human rights has always been a part of my life since my activist days in the Central American solidarity movement in the 80’s.

I hope you enjoy these samples of some of our work for BookheadEd as much as we enjoyed narrating them! We welcome your feedback always.

Gracias mil,

Rosi

Bilingual Overdubs for L’Oreal Paris – Empowering Women

January 20, 2015 by Rosi Amador

Defending women’s rights and empowering women are missions I strongly believe in that took flight during my life-changing days at Bryn Mawr College, so it was such an honor for me to voice for L’Oreal Paris all of last year. Every Wednesday, I had the pleasure of recording bilingual overdubs in English and Spanish for L’Oreal’s weekly international podcast series featuring the voices of their leaders from around the globe.

I found their L’Oreal Foundation’s “For Women in Science Program” (in partnership with UNESCO), which provides support for women researchers, particularly inspiring. I frequently recorded with Brian, and occasionally our daughter Sonia participated, which was even more fun.

It was enticing to me to voice how new, environmentally-sensitive products are being sustainably produced, and how these can empower global communities of women to look and feel their best.

I’d love to know what you think of the podcast samples and this “Projects We Love” highlight, so please email me, Rosi, via our website!

Incidentally, last July we were so lucky to meet the podcasts’ producers in person at Goom Social Radio Factory headquarters in Paris. Merçi Juliette et Laura!
