Voiceover For Educational Awareness

As the first member of my family to attend college, I am passionate about the issue of educational access. My parents, who raised me in San Juan, Puerto Rico, had always been quite clear about their desire for me to attend college in the United States. My dad was only able to make it through 5th grade in his native Buenos Aires. And my mom, following her graduation from a public high school in a Latino neighborhood of New York City, started working as a secretary to support her family. You can only imagine how thrilled they were when I was accepted to Bryn Mawr, my top choice for college.

I was able to attend quality schools throughout my upbringing because of my parents’ perseverance, tenacity, and business savvy. I now have the honor of belonging to a family that gives back by lending our voices to numerous educational projects. We are fortunate to collaborate with creators who are as passionate about the value of education and creativity as we are.

The Boom in Online Learning

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many people shifted to remote working, so naturally, people are increasingly looking to digital learning to develop new skills to navigate today’s ever-changing world.

The US has the highest number of online learners with almost 18 million, according to the World Economic Forum, even ahead of China and India! That increase in the need for learning meant that we got to lend our voices to many more amazing projects in these last three years.

Serving a Growing Spanish-Speaking Educational Market

Forbes reported that as of 2022, 13% of the population speaks Spanish at home, earning it the title of the most common non-English language spoken. The U.S. is home to the 2nd largest Spanish-speaking population in the world, behind only Mexico. It’s no wonder that more than half of our work since 2020 has been for content creators of Spanish language e-learning. We’ve recorded for a vast variety of educational projects, in unaccented American English, neutral Latin American Spanish, and Hispanic-accented English. With our revolutionary Accent-o-meter, you can check out the varying levels of hispanic accents we can provide.

Educational Narration for A New World

My husband Brian, our son Zia and I all love using our voices to promote global education, social change and cross-cultural understanding. Our skill set is well suited to providing voiceovers and educational narration for both young and adult audiences. Whether it’s an online video, a bilingual television promo, a Spanish overdub, or an animated educational game, we are privileged to provide voice overs and related services (music, translation) to enhance our clients’ projects. It’s a wonderful job.

I’m proud to highlight some examples of voice over work we’ve done on educational projects created by wonderful clients, new and old.

WNET, New York Public Media’s “Parenting Minutes” ~ Rosi Amador, Narrator

Rosi Amador provided the Spanish voiceover and overdub for this educational spot for Thirteen-WNET, the primary Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member television station for the New York City market. Many thanks to The WNET Group and Suzanne Rose, Senior Producer at Thirteen-WNET, for this amazing opportunity!

Planned Parenthood & Springtime Jellyfish’s “Am I Normal? Puberty, Explained” ~ Zia Amador, Narrator

Zia Amador recorded both the English and Spanish voice for “Am I Normal? Puberty, Explained”. Springtime Jellyfish teamed up with Planned Parenthood for their new series explaining puberty, a total of four videos. For this project we worked with the Planned Parenthood team and combined stop-motion animation with 2D digital animation to create a unique, inviting, playful and friendly video series.

JSI & the Reproductive Health National Training Center’s “Family Planning & Hypertension” ~ Brian Amador, Narrator

Brian Amador recorded the English voiceover for this educational piece about family planning and hypertension for the Reproductive Health National Training Center (RHNTC), as part of their collaboration with the Office of Population Affairs (OPA) and the Office on Women’s Health (OWH) in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health to address the needs of Title X family planning service delivery grantees and Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) grantees through training and technical assistance (TA).

A Great Year For Our Bilingual Voiceovers! 2018 In Review

Thanks to all our fabulous clients and staff, Amador Bilingual Voiceovers has grown so much! 2018 was our best year yet, and we would like to take a moment to reflect on some of the highlights.

1) 2018 “Best Commercial Demo” Award From The Society Of Voice Arts And Sciences

We were thrilled that Rosi won in the category of “Best Commercial Demo” from the Society of Voice Arts & Sciences! This is her first voiceover award since becoming a full time bilingual voiceover actor eight years ago. 2) Yo Te Apoyo – Brian & Alisa on-camera

Usually when you hear us, you don’t see us. But this year Brian was cast in an on-camera spot for the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, and Alisa got a non-speaking part as…wait for it…his daughter! We were fortunate this year to be able to lend our voices to many causes we believe in.

3) Alisa – Amazon Prime Spotify Ad

What can we say? We’re a wee bit proud of our little bundle of joy. In 2018, she

  • graduated from Bates College
  • got a lot of well-earned recognition for her beautiful music, including winning the first annual Rock the Hall talent competition at Tarrytown (NY) Music Hall
  • kicked her voice over career up a notch, recording several high profile VO jobs, and getting on the rosters of some great agencies, including the Umberger Agency, DiSanti Talents, and TAG Talent.

4) One Heart – all three of our voices

It’s always a joy when we get to work together on a project, especially when we get to play using our character voices and overdubbing into our neutral Latin American Spanish.  Here’s one the three of us did for The Hospitals of Providence. Yes, the voices are all us!

2018 saw the launch of an idea that had been percolating for a long time – The Revolutionary Accent-o-Meter™!

Much of our work is in Hispanic-accented English, but we often found that our clients didn’t know exactly how much accent they wanted until they heard some examples. This little gadget allows them to hear our voices with varying levels of accent and choose what they’re looking for, saving a great deal of back-and-forth and streamlining the production process.

Producer’s Guide to PSAs for the Hispanic Market

PSAs ImageProducers of public service announcements (PSAs) for the Hispanic market know that skilled bilingual voiceover talent is a powerful weapon in their arsenal when it comes to creating PSAs that resonate with their intended audienc

ABCs of PSAs

PSAs are used to inform the general public and promote government programs, services, or activities or those of non-profit organizations. To be effective, they need to engage the audience with a relatable message and delivery.

Over the years, Rosi and I have had the honor of voicing bilingual PSAs for causes that we wholeheartedly support. We recorded English and Spanish versions of the  “Ask MOVA” spots, produced for the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance.  These PSAs were created to inform survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing of the services available to them.

Working with ChavoBart Digital Media, our whole family recorded the environmentally themed PSA “La Familia Verde/The Verde Family”.  And in the wake of Hurricane María, Amador Bilingual Voiceovers partnered with MORE Advertising to create PSAs for the Massachusetts United for Puerto Rico Fund. We produced and voiced the spots, in addition to providing original music.

What Makes a Great PSA Voiceover?

Whether targeting the Hispanic population or a general market, producers who create powerful calls to action are looking for a specific skill set from voiceover talent. Being able to meet this need has allowed us to put our voices to work where they are most useful.

Here are some important qualities to look for in bilingual voice talent for PSAs:

1. Perfect command of both English and neutral Latin American Spanish.

Often the same campaign will be produced for both English- and Spanish-speaking media. Having voice actors who can speak both languages can streamline the process and save the producer money. Neutral Latin American Spanish, which avoids regional dialects and accents, is useful in reaching Spanish-speaking audiences of all backgrounds.

2. Ability to offer varying degrees of Hispanic-accented English.

Like advertising, PSAs are often most effective when the listener feels an affinity with the person talking. In Hispanic markets, this means there’s a demand for Hispanic-accented English. Finding the right degree of accent can be a challenge, and for that purpose we created The Revolutionary Accent-O-Meter.

3. Experience and an ability to take direction quickly and accurately.

The goal of many PSAs is to make an emotional appeal to the listener. To do that successfully, the voice actor has to be able to take direction, and to offer different interpretations of the same copy.

4. An understanding of the PSA’s purpose and the ability to convey it powerfully and emotionally.

Voice acting is acting. And acting depends on the ability to analyze the script and interepret it through the lens of one’s own experiences. This is a skill developed over time, and it’s painfully obvious when it’s lacking.

5. A topnotch recording studio that can deliver consistently good audio.

While many PSA producers choose to work in commercial studios, a professional quality home studio can save money and streamline the creative process. Internet-based audio platforms offer producers the ability to hear and direct the voice talent, or even to record remotely. Some of the most popular are ip-DTL, Session Link Pro, and Source-Connect.

6. BONUS! Music

The capacity to add an audience-appropriate original music bed and to fully produce the spots. This can save the producer time and money and enhance the consistency of the spot.

7. EXTRA BONUS! Translation and Script Supervision

The best way to create a PSA targeted to a Spanish-speaking audience is to create it from scratch in Spanish. But that’s not always possible. If a producer wants to create a Spanish spot based on preexisting English copy, it’s vital that the translation be accurate, idiomatic, and culturally relevant. It’s no exaggeration to say that a bad translation can ruin a PSA. We’re often called upon to translate spots or to tweak them so the Spanish sounds more natural.

Rosi Amador’s Pro Theater Debut in “In The Heights”

From the voiceover studio to the acclaimed Wheelock Family Theater stage in Boston, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve made my live theater premiere in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s (of Hamilton fame) first Broadway musical, In The Heights, playing Camila, one of the principal roles. This is a dream come true!

This 2008 Tony Award-winner for Best Musical centers on an ensemble of characters in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City. My character is a strong Puerto Rican mother – kind’a, sort’a who I am! This extraordinary play addresses themes of immigration, Latin culture, connection, love, unity, community and home. It ranges from poignant to hilarious, and the songs (all in great Latin rhythms) and choreography serve the story line faithfully.

I haven’t performed in a musical since my days at Bryn Mawr College. During my adolescence it was one of my passions, so you can imagine how honored I am to have been given this opportunity by the award-winning Wheelock Family Theater, where our family saw so many fabulous topnotch musicals when our twins were little, and where they studied theater in the summer.

I cried when I was offered the role and I’m very happy to say that it has been a wonderful experience! We’ve had responsive full houses in the gorgeous 660 seat theater since the show opened. The 16 show run (plus 6 packed shows for middle and high school students) turned into an 18-show run and the last 6 shows have completely sold out! That coupled with a string of standing ovations has made this experience something I will never, ever forget.

What am I most grateful for? How much this stretched me as an actor, of course! As a voice actor I have continuously studied to improve my skills with fantastic casting directors and coaches. But add in the blocking, the interaction with other actors and the way the audience responds differently each night, and it’s a whole other ball of wax. I have had to continuously respond to the stimuli in the moment. Fun!

I’m reminded of how much I’ve grown since studying with my talented friend Rebecca Haugh’s “Love That Improv” online voiceover improvisation classes, which have helped me become a more creative voice actor.

Of course, I feel tremendous gratitude toward the other talented actor/singers and dancers in the show for their inspiration and patience as I learned all about the theater world and lingo.

The experience has challenged me, but I believe I rose to the occasion thanks to good direction and stewardship from those around me. Gracias de nuevo – thanks again to the Wheelock Family Theater, for choosing me. Lastly, I’m also deeply grateful to all the friends who traveled from all parts of the country to see me perform. I’m so blessed.

I’m reminded of how fortunate I am to make my living from my voice and creativity. From music, to voiceover, to singing and acting on the stage, this experience reminds me of how we transitioned from our full-time music career into voiceover, years ago. I’ve loved every minute of it, but I so look forward to helping my clients once again at my voiceover studio, once we take that final bow on Sunday night!

Recientemente, nuestro buen amigo y actor de voz súper talentoso Doug Turkel  compartió este perspicaz artículo con nosotros, “The Importance of Marketing to Hispanics Online in Spanish” (“La importancia del marketing online dirigido a hispanos en español”) de Walter Godinez, que se relaciona perfectamente con nuestra experiencia como locutores bilingües profesionales.

Cómo explica Godinez, “Para el año 2017, el poder adquisitivo de los hispanos en Estados Unidos alcanzará $1.7 trillones de dólares, y para el año 2020 la población representará casi el 20% de la población total de los EE.UU.” Estas estadísticas muestran el creciente poder del consumidor hispano, y la creciente necesidad de publicidad y materiales de eLearning en español.

Una Generación Bilingüe y Bicultural

A medida que la población hispana de los EE.UU. continúa creciendo, el idioma español sigue siendo importante cultural y lingüísticamente para cada generación hispana. Este creciente grupo de personas se expresa tanto en inglés como en español. Promover su identidad bicultural a través de contenido bilingüe es beneficioso tanto para los productores como para los consumidores.

Las Locuciones Bilingües Funcionan en Ambos Sentidos

Este es un comercial de TV bilingüe que narré para Nevada Health. (El anuncio en español está justo después del anuncio en inglés.) En este caso, nuestra experiencia con traducciones nos permitió ayudar al productor a cambiar un guion traducido literalmente a uno más cotidiano que reflejaba el guion original en inglés –uno que se ajusta mejor a como el televidente latino en realidad habla.

A veces nos piden hacer doblajes de español a inglés para hacer el mensaje accesible para una audiencia (angloparlante) de los EE.UU. De igual forma, nos honra que nuestro trabajo ayude a expandir el alcance de mensajes importantes.
